GLOBAL KIDS CHRONICLES:

SEPTEMBER 2024 UPDATE

Dear Global Kids Community,

With the academic year in full swing, weโ€™re incredibly proud to reflect on the impact our students in New York City and Washington D.C. created during the summer months. From revitalizing a public school in Costa Rica, to meeting with esteemed elected officials and discussing critical issues affecting our country, our students were exposed to many opportunities that empowered them to share their fresh perspectives and effect lasting change.

We invite you to continue learning more about our studentsโ€™ experiences as they embark on their path to becoming engaged, global citizens!

NYC AND D.C. GLOBAL KIDS VENTURE TO COSTA RICA TO GIVE BACK

Global Kids students from New York City and Washington D.C. visit Costa Rica to make a positive difference and learn more about the countryโ€™s history

Twenty of our students from New York City and Washington D.C. traveled to Turrialba, Costa Rica during the last few weeks of their summer break to give back to the local community by restoring a local public school, while immersing themselves in the countryโ€™s history, culture, politics, education, and more.

During the 14-day trip, which took place from August 5-19, the students were immersed in pura vida culture as they tasted Costa Rican delicacies, such as gallo pinto, explored local markets and landmarks in Cartago, and created connections with locals. The highlight of the trip was the studentsโ€™ service-learning project, where they helped revitalize a local elementary school by cleaning up the field, cleaning classrooms and painting.ย

Our students enriched their cultural experience through excursions to a local dairy farm, Finca La Florita, where they spent time milking cows; and a coffee plantation, which offered a coffee tasting and history lesson about the discovery of coffee. While in Costa Rica, the students also engaged with local industry leaders and families, practiced Spanish, cooked traditional dishes, and learned about the countryโ€™s economic and social structure.ย Additionally, prior to the trip, several of the students met with Dr. Catalina Crespo Sancho, Ambassador of Costa Rica to the United States, to learn about the impact of sustainability and eco-tourism on the infrastructure of the countryโ€™s international trade, global policy and foreign relations.ย ย

Organized in collaboration with our partner Global Glimpse โ€“ a nonprofit organization that partners with a diversity of high schools to provide powerful travel experiences โ€“ this once-in-a-lifetime trip was carefully planned to provide our youth with an impactful experience that encouraged them to broaden their horizons, influence progress and effect powerful change for underserved communities in their cities and around the world. ย

Following the trip, a few of our students had the exciting opportunity to share their experiences with local media. PIX11 joined us at our headquarters in New York City to speak with Global Kids youth leaders Shaun Evelynn and Julissa Roque, as well as Global Kids Assistant Director of Practice and Impact Leslie Cano, who travelled alongside the students. The studentsโ€™ experiences were also featured on FOX 5 D.C., which ran a segment showcasing highlights from the trip.

GLOBAL KIDS HOLDS VIRTUAL TOWN HALL TO CULTIVATE YOUTH AWARENESS

This summer, we organized a virtual town hall meeting to bring together our youth with thought leaders and educators to discuss current political events and how young people can engage their peers and communities to work toward a more civil discourse that promotes the core factors of democracy. The town hall was moderated by Global Kids Board Chair Richard Roberts and featured a panel discussion with Asst. Professor History at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Edward Paulino and Global Kids youth leaders Shaun Evelyn and Thandi Kirk.
