Global Kids Literacy Specialist

Part-Time Position

Global Kids educates, activates and inspires young people from underserved communities to take action on critical issues facing our world. Global Kids, Inc. is seeking dynamic, hard-working, and creative individuals who are experienced in youth development, academic support, global education, and social action, and are interested in working in New York City public middle schools in Washington Heights and East Flatbush. COVID-19 vaccination is required. All positions will be in-person.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students daily in small group settings to supplement and enhance traditional in class reading/ English language arts instruction.
  • Prepare reading instruction lesson plans in accordance with a set program curriculum as dictated by the individual needs of each student and collaborate with GK staff and youth to generate new program ideas and content focusing on global/local issues.
  • Assist in the coordination, and co-facilitation of interactive, experiential workshops and activities for GK’s weekly school-based academic programs and after-school leadership groups.
  • Conduct attendance and academic outreach services and maintain necessary documentation, program data and attendance records and provide periodic progress reports as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or currently enrolled college student
  • Qualifying test score on a reading comprehension assessment
  • Experience working with youth and/or using interactive learning strategies
  • Commitment to and understanding of working in culturally diverse settings and using antiracist practices
  • Knowledge of and passion for literacy skill development, global issues, political science, history, education and social activism.
  • Excellent facilitation, consensus-building and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong work ethic, initiative, creativity, willingness to learn, and ability to complete multiple tasks independently.
  • Strong communication, writing, organizational, and technology skills.
  • Fluency in other languages is a plus (particularly Spanish or Haitian Creole).

Hours/Wages/Benefits

Literacy Specialists will be required to work September – June during afterschool hours, plus additional hours of training, preparation and follow up time at a time to be scheduled with GK staff (typically between 1:30-6:00pm M-F, depending on the site placement). Position is paid $16-$21 an hour (based on qualifications) for 20 hours per week. GK also offers paid vacation time off, personal day, and sick time.
