We have to think of ways to use games not just to escape reality but to re-engage with reality. And I think that is the exciting things about the kind of work you are doing at Global Kids. It is both grounded in the virtual space and the real space. You are talking about real things, that touch real people. And you are asking people to bring what they learn here back into their own communities to make a difference. That is one of the reasons why I really believe in what Global Kids is trying to accomplish.

Building on its nationally recognized approach to using virtual worlds to promote global awareness and youth civic engagement, Global Kids offers services to nonprofits, educational organizations, and other institutions interested in using Second Life and other virtual worlds to extend their work. Currently, we can provide the following services:

Program Development and Brand Management

Services focus on:
  • Translating existing brands and content into an engaging format and leveraging the unique opportunities of virtual worlds.
  • Educational project design, development and management.
  • Clients and collaborators have included: The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, UNICEF, The National Youth Leadership Council, The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the International Criminal Court.

Professional Development and Educational Consulting

Services focus on:
  • Training individuals and organizations to develop skills and learn best practices for conducting programs in Second Life.
  • Clients and collaborators have included: McKinley Technical High School (Washington, DC).
Organizing and Conducting Live Events in Second Life

Services focus on:
  • Broadcasting speakers, conferences, and other events.
  • Recent events have included: Mia Farrow speaking on Darfur, Henry Jenkins discussing games and learning, The MacArthur Foundation’s announcement of the Digital Media, Education and Learning Initiative, and the National Service Learning Conference.
